メールありがとうございました。元気です！いきなり全く違う生活に変わったので最初はびびってましたが、だいぶなれました。まず語学学校で到着した翌日にレベル分けテストを受けました。レベル４では文法、リスニング、ライティングを総合的に扱っていますが、あまり大変ではありません。レベル５では語学研修の新聞を週1で発行したり、レベル６では独自のテーマについてホームルームでプレゼンをしたりと、より実践的な活動をしているようです。語学学校はすごく楽しい。いろんな国の人がいるので面白いです。全体的に言って、韓国人と一番馬が合う気がする。

TOEFL頑張ります・・・・・・ リスニング少しは上達した気がしますけどね。 それで、語学研修の授業ではTOEFLに直接関係のある問題を解いたりすることは一切ないので、少し困っています。１５０ドルでTOEFL専用のエキストラのクラスを受講できますが、それをとったほうがよかったかも。少なくとも、こっちではTOEFLの参考書が極めて希少なので、日本で買っていけばよかったと後悔しています。今はそのクラスを取っている友達に、テキストをコピーさせてもらって何とかTOEFLの勉強をしています。 （ちなみに彼は語学研修最終日に受けたTOEFLで留学先大学のスコアをクリアしました。）

4 weeks have past, and I have had many experiences since I came to Indianapolis. I think that ESL (English as a Second Language) classes did not improve my writing and grammar that much, but speaking and listening skills have improved. We had TOEFL and only 6 people got over 550 points. Most students who want to go to the university in America already have close to or over 550 so the writing and grammar classes that I took might be too easy. But I think in Japan, we don't have a chance to speak English. In the classes, many people try and can speak English. The ESL teachers try their students to speak English a lot. This program will help you speak English much better than going to conversation school for many years. I think it will be hard to speak and understand English in America so I think taking ESL classes is a good way to get used to English.

The best point of this school is that you could meet International students. Most Japanese people don't care about other countries, and I was one of them. After going to this ESL school, I got interested in Asia and South American countries. It is interesting to learn cultural differences between Japan and other countries. Indianapolis is in countryside so it was hard to live here without a car. Sometimes I had really nothing to do, but my friend had a car so I did not get bored. In conclusion, ESL is a very good place to learn speaking and listening English. Probably there will be Japanese students, but you will speak to them with English. Japanese are earnest so they will listen to what the teachers say and the teachers say not to use their native language. You can enjoy meeting with international friends, because once the university starts I think you will be busy studying and catching up with the classes.

それから、語学研修のよいところは、ホストファミリーがみんないい人だと言う事だと思います。僕のホストマザーのキャロルさんはすごく親身になってくれて、ほんとの孫みたいに接してくれます。普段の生活の事も、学校の事も、エッセイの添削やプレゼンなどで手助けをしてくれます。それから、クラスの人たちの話を聞いてもみんな良い人たちだということです。はじめホームステイに少し不安を感じていましたが、語学研修にはいい方たちが集まっているようで安心しました。 あと同じ家にアラビア人が二人いるんですが、彼らもいい人たちです。

I also had a good experience with my vegetarian host family. I ate meat only for lunch. At first, this was hard for me, but in a week I got used to it. Also my host mother was Japanese so I had no problem with food. My host mother came to America when she was 18 to go to university. I heard many things about American university. She said that I would get lots of stress and other things.

JSAFの方々には本当にお世話してもらっています。どうもありがとうございます！当時の現地プレジデントのバニスターさんも凄くいい人で感銘を受けました。BBQで食べたステーキはうまかったなあ。

始めの一週間はインターナショナルスチューデントのためのオリエンテーションでしたが、同じインターナショナルの二年生、三年生のボランティアが色々な企画を用意していたのに驚きました。遊園地に行ったり、BBQに行ったり、パーティーをしたり、モールに買い物に行ったり、等等。それにオリエンテーション期間中にはたくさん友達ができました。

メールありがとうございました。授業はまあまあです。早速宿題やらクイズやらでたのでいきなり忙しくなりました。また週末にでも、色々と報告します。

PLUに着き一週間がたちました。色々大変でした。international　orientation　に行って驚きました。アジア人が３人しかいませんでした。日本人は僕一人だけでした。９０％がノルウェーの人で彼らはみんな英語がとても上手でした。語学学校との差が大きくてびっくりしました。僕は以前アメリカに住んでいたので良かったのですが、普通の日本人にはつらいのではと思いました。International advisorも英語が出来て当たり前のように接してきました。日本人との接触を控えたい人はこの学校は良いのではないでしょうか。多分、日本人はそれなりにいると思うのですが今の所日本人の生徒は一人会いましたが大学院生でした。やはり語学学校と大学は違います。まだ授業が始まっていませんが、それでも語学学校と比べてPLUは大変です。IndianaではSAFのスタッフ以外はあまり本場の英語に接する機会がなかったためある意味楽でした。PLUの留学生、つまりノルウェーの人達は英語に全く問題がないので英語を学びにきている語学学校の生徒とは英語力も違い、その他の生徒はアメリカ人なのでPLUは英語が出来て当たり前の環境です。語学学校では色々な国から集まっているため、お互いに興味をもっているので積極的に話し合いますが、ノルウェーの人やアメリカ人は別に他の国に興味を示さないので自分から話さないとコミュニケーションが取れませんでした。その上アメリカ人と面白く話す会話がまだ身についていないので結構つらいです。

My classes have started and I am taking all the classes I have registered. All courses, except the writing, are hard, and I think entrepreneurship is going to be the hardest of all. Looking on the bright side, however, I thought it would be very hard to listen to what the teacher and the students were saying but it was better than I thought. It is going to be hard if I don't study the subject before class, but reading the text before the class made it better than I thought. One class went beyond the reading and I couldn't understand what the teacher was saying. So I learned that reading the textbook is very important.

課題も多岐にわたり、リーディングに始まり、プレゼンテーション、グループディスカッション、ディベート、オンラインクイズ、エッセイ、等等。心理学のラボでは、自分のウェブサイトを作って実験レポートを載せる、ということもやりました。教授もみんないい方たちで、特に留学生には質問さえすれば丁寧に説明しなおしてくれます。Ｅメールを通じても、常にコンタクトを取れるので助かります。

I had a nice weekend. I enjoyed a city tour, which took us around Richmond town by bus, and we saw several historical places as Capitol of Richmond. Then we went to see a movie in town. I was surprised to see the scenery of Richmond. It was just wonderful!! I enjoyed the beautiful suburban area and downtown as well.

週末になると、学生は人が変わったように遊びだします。 この間学校のスポーツセンター主催のトーナメントに出て、そこで知り合った友達と週末はテニスをしたり、日本人の友達の家に遊びに行ったり、ルームメイトとパーティーに行ったりしています。

My roommate is good. He is young, friendly, and kind. He likes to talk (sometimes he can be noisy), and is interested in Japanese culture. He majored in Japanese language at his university in Russia so that he understands and reads Japanese.

I've got some international friends from Russia, Italy, Hong Kong, etc, and of course Japan. I've acquainted with several American students. I felt it is more difficult to make American friends than making International friends. I mean it needs more effort to make American friends.

After I heard the news I was shocked. I lived in NJ, so New York City was close and I cannot believe what happened. At my university there wasn't much change. Some universities had their class cancelled but we had the regular classes.

大学生活がスタートしておおよそ一ヶ月ほど経ちましたが、新しい経験に驚く毎日を送っています。授業が始まると、とたんに生活が変わり宿題に追われる毎日。未だに授業についていくのがやっとです。たまに英語力のなさに落ち込みます。大学のインターナショナルオフィスの方々はとても理解のある人たちばかりで、落ち込んだときにはよく話しに行っています。

ところで、大学に来る前の語学研修では、無条件で友達ができたり、JＳＡＦの方々が色々とサポートをしてくれたりと、かなり楽しい３週間を過ごしました。特に当時のJＳＡＦインディアナオフィスのスタッフには普段の生活面で本当にお世話になり、更に大学に来てからもメールで色々と気遣いをしてくれて、本当に助かっています。映画に連れて行ってくれたり、ホームパーティーに招待してくれたり、自転車を貸してくれたり、思い返せば色々と迷惑もかけました。すみません・・・。 大学に来てJSAFが後ろにいて助かりました。アメリカに知り合いがいるということは心強いことです。当時のJSAFのスタッフはアメリカ人ですが僕達のことを心配してくれるし、いざというときにとても心強いと思います。International advisorを頼りにしてもよいのですが、一ヶ月間色々お世話になった人達ですので信頼の度合いが違います。
